Early Life

Tremont Waters was born on January 10, 1998, in New Haven, Connecticut. He spent three years at South Kent School, a private all‑boys prep school in Connecticut, where he first played organized basketball and earned recognition even as a freshman. For his senior year, he transferred to Notre Dame High School in West Haven, where he became one of the state’s top players and was selected for the Jordan Brand Classic. In 2015, he tried out for Puerto Rico’s U‑17 national team, connecting with his Puerto Rican heritage through his mother’s family in San Juan. During high school, he received both the Gatorade Connecticut Player of the Year and the New Haven Register State Player of the Year awards in 2017.

College Career

Tremont Waters played two seasons for the LSU Tigers. He started as a freshman in 2017–18, averaging 15.9 points, 6.0 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. He set a new LSU freshman record with 198 assists, topping the previous mark held by Ben Simmons. He was named to the All-Freshman SEC team and earned the Freshman of the Year award in Louisiana.
In his sophomore year (2018–19), Waters continued to lead the team with averages of 15.3 points, 5.8 assists, and 2.9 steals per game. He broke LSU’s single-season steals record with 96 and tied his own school record for assists with 192. That season he was voted First Team All SEC and named SEC Co Defensive Player of the Year.
One of his standout performances was a 39 point game against Marquette on November 22, 2017. He scored the winning layup for LSU in the 2019 NCAA Tournament second round against Maryland and posted strong tournament numbers: averaging 16.7 points, 4.7 assists, and 1.7 steals per game.
Across both seasons, Waters played in 66 college games and averaged 15.6 points, 5.9 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game. He became one of LSU’s top assist leaders with 390 career assists and was one of the program’s top defenders during that time.

Professional Career

Tremont Waters was selected by the Boston Celtics in the second round (51st overall) of the 2019 NBA Draft. He joined the Celtics and played in the 2019 Summer League, averaging 11.2 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. On July 25, 2019, he signed a two-way contract, which meant he split time between the Celtics and their G League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.
In his rookie season in the G League (2019–20), Waters averaged 18.0 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game over 36 games. He ranked sixth in assists and 14th in steals across the league. He scored at least 20 points and had seven assists in ten games, with a season-high of 33 points and seven assists in a win over Greensboro. Waters was named NBA G League Rookie of the Year, earned NBA G League Player of the Month for November, All NBA G League Second Team, and All Rookie First Team honors.
On the NBA side, Waters appeared in ten games for the Celtics over two seasons, averaging about 3.8 points, 2.1 assists, and 0.9 rebounds in roughly 9.6 minutes per game. He re-signed another two-way deal with the Celtics on November 23, 2020.
In late 2021 Waters signed briefly with the Milwaukee Bucks but was waived before the season. He then joined the Wisconsin Herd in the G League, where in 13 games he averaged 17.2 points, 6.0 assists, and 2.7 steals per game. On December 22, 2021, he signed a 10-day NBA contract with the Toronto Raptors, followed shortly by a similar 10-day deal with the Washington Wizards on January 1, 2022.
After those NBA stints, he returned to the Wisconsin Herd and averaged about 15.4 points, 6.9 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game. On February 24, 2022, Waters was traded to the South Bay Lakers, where he had appeared in 14 games, averaging 15.6 points, 6.9 assists, and 2.9 rebounds in about 33.5 minutes per game.
In March 2022, he was drafted first overall by the Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rico’s league. During that season he averaged 17.8 points, 8.0 assists and 1.7 steals per game and was named Rookie of the Year in that league.
Later, his playing rights were acquired by the Memphis Hustle. At that time he had played in 65 G League games across three teams and appeared in 40 NBA games with the Celtics, Raptors, and Wizards. He also signed with Boulogne Levallois Metropolitans 92 in France’s top professional league, averaging 17.1 points, 4.9 assists and 2.0 steals in 28.8 minutes per game in 17 appearances.
