By age ten, he was playing piano and began teaching himself guitar, practicing on his brother’s instrument until the strings broke.
As a teenager, he explored various musical sounds like gospel, blues, and rock, and studied jazz piano under instructors such as Jaki Byard and Ran Blake. He also joined a gifted youth program at the Hartford Conservatory, where he studied piano, saxophone, composition, and music theory.
After spending a year at Western Connecticut State University, he left college and moved to New York City’s East Village in 1977. There, he discovered the post-punk and no-wave music scene, which played a major role in shaping his unique musical style.
