Jul 20, 202535.4K Shares473K Views Sugar Ray Norciawas born Raymond Alan Norcia on June 6, 1954, in Stonington, Connecticut, and later moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where he grew up surrounded by music. He started playing blues harmonica in high school and learned from listening to legends like Little Walter and Big Walter Horton. In 1979, he formed Sugar Ray & the Bluetones with guitarist Ronnie Earl. Their band became the house group at a local club and backed famous blues artists like Big Walter Horton, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, and Roosevelt Sykes in nearby venues.
Norcia released solo EPs in the early 1980s, such as Sugar Ray & the Bluetones(1979) and Ronnie Earl and his Broadcasters featuring the Sensational Sugar Ray(1982). He then recorded two acclaimed albums with Rounder Records: Knockout(1989) and Don’t Stand in My Way(1991).
In 1991, he joined Roomful of Blues as lead vocalist, recording three albums and touring globally before leaving the group in 1998. He returned to his own projects and released Sweet & Swingin’the same year.
In 1999, he joined fellow harmonica masters James Cotton, Billy Branch, and Charlie Musselwhite on the Grammy-nominated album Superharps. He has since played on projects with artists like Pinetop Perkins and Doug James, and performed worldwide with the Sugar Ray Norcia Big Band.
Over four decades, he has led blues bands, earned Grammy nominations, won multiple Blues Music Awards, and was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2012.
