Spencer Knightis a talented professional ice hockey goaltender who plays for the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected 13th overall by the Panthers in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft, making him one of the highest-drafted American goalies in NHL history. Knight made his NHL debut on April 20, 2021, with a win against the Columbus Blue Jackets, becoming the first goalie born in the 21st century to play in the league. He quickly gained attention for his composure in the net and ability to stay calm under pressure, even during the playoffs. Early Life
Spencer Knight was born on April 19, 2001, in Darien, Connecticut, in the United States. He grew up in a supportive family with his parents, Chris Knight and Lilly Knight. Sports were a big part of his childhood, and he especially loved playing ice hockey from a young age.
Knight showed early talent in goal, and he kept learning and working hard in local youth leagues. His strong work and love for the game helped him advance quickly as he grew up.
Playing Career
Spencer Knight began his hockey career at the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, winning a record 59 games over two seasons. He then played two years at Boston Collegeand earned top awards, including Hockey East Goaltending Champion, Player of the Year, and First Team All-Star honors in his sophomore year. In 2021, Knight signed with the Florida Panthersand made his NHL debut just after turning 20, becoming the first goalie born in the 21st century to play and win in the NHL. He made 33 savesin a 5–1 victory over Columbus.
In the 2021 Calder Cup playoffs, Knight started two games against Tampa Bay, stopping 56 of 60 shots(.933 save percentage) and becoming the youngest goalie in league history to win an elimination playoff game. The following season, he had a strong rookie campaign for Florida, posting a franchise-record 19 wins for a rookie, earning his first two NHL shutouts, and becoming the youngest Panthers goalie to record a shutout on March 18, 2022.
Knight continued with Florida into 2023–24, splitting time between NHL and AHL. In the AHL with Charlotte, he earned the Fred T. Hunt Memorial Awardfor his sportsmanship and perseverance. During 2024–25, he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, in a deal with Florida involving defenseman Seth Jones and draft picks.
In his first game for Chicago, Knight let in just one goal while making 41 saves, helping lead the team to a 5–1 win over the Los Angeles Kings. At the time of the trade, his career record with Floridastood at 44‑25‑7, with a .906 save percentageand 2.76 goals-against averageover 80 games.
Most recently, Knight earned his second shutout of the seasonin January 2025, stopping 34 shots in a 3‑0 win vs. the Anaheim Ducksmarking the fifth shutout of his NHL career.
