Seth MacFarlane’s name is known in families everywhere thanks to his sharp humor and unforgettable characters. He created the animated hit series Family Guy, American Dad!and The Cleveland Show, and also stars in his sci fi dramedy The Orville. He writes, produces, directs, and voices many of the characters in his shows, including Peter and Stewie Griffin, earning multiple Emmy Awards for his work. Beyond TV, he moved into movies with Tedand its sequel, and he built a successful side career as a jazz singer with Grammy nominated albums.

Early Life

Seth Woodbury MacFarlane was born on October 26, 1973, in Kent, Connecticut, to Ronald Milton MacFarlane (a teacher) and Ann Perry (a school admissions adviser). He has a younger sister, Rachael, who also works as a voice actress, and he is of English, Scottish, Irish, Italian, and Welsh ancestry with deep roots in New England.
He began drawing cartoons like Fred Flintstone and Woody Woodpecker at just two years old. By age five, he knew he wanted a career in animation and started creating flip books after his parents found him a book on the subject.
At nine, he published a weekly comic strip called Walter Croutonin the local paper, earning five dollars a week for his work. He graduated from the Kent School in 1991, and his parents gave him an 8 mm camera so he could keep practicing animation throughout high school.
He then attended the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in animation in 1995. At RISD, he created a thesis film called The Life of Larry, which caught the attention of animation studios and led to his first professional job.

Career

Seth MacFarlane began his career after graduating from RISD in 1995 and working as an animator and writer at Hanna-Barbera on shows like Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, and Dexter’s Laboratory. He created and refined the animated short Larry & Steve, which caught the attention of Fox executives (who later ordered the pilot for Family Guy).
At 24, Seth became the youngest showrunner in television history when Family Guypremiered on Fox in 1999. He also voices multiple characters—Peter, Stewie, Brian, and Quagmire—and the show has won several Emmy Awards, including many for his voice-over performances. Following the return of Family Guyin 2005, he co-created American Dad!(2005) and later The Cleveland Show(2009), continuing to expand his animated universe.
In 2012, Seth made his feature film directorial debut with Ted, starring and voicing the adult teddy bear, which grossed over $540 million worldwide. He went on to write, direct, and star in A Million Ways to Die in the West(2014) and Ted 2(2015).
He also created, executive produced, and starred in The Orville, a live‑action, space‑drama/comedy series. It earned praise for its rich storytelling across multiple seasons, including The Orville: New Horizons. Additionally, he executive-produced the docuseries Cosmos: A Space Time Odysseyand its sequel Cosmos: Possible Worlds—projects seen by millions globally and honored with Emmy and Peabody Award nominations.
Alongside his screen work, MacFarlane has released jazz albums that earned Grammy nominations, hosted the Academy Awards, performed live with symphonies, and created content under his production company, Fuzzy Door. His shows include upcoming adaptations like the TedTV series and a reimagined Good Timessitcom.
MacFarlane’s career blends animation, live action, music, and philanthropy. He has received multiple Emmy Awards (especially for voice acting), a Webby Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2020.
