He studied drama at the University of Connecticut and co‑founded a community theater as a teenager, overcoming a childhood stutter to find his voice on stage. His breakthrough came in 1975 when he joined Welcome Back, Kotteras Arnold Horshack, a role that made him a pop‑culture icon. While the character brought him fame, it also led to typecasting that made future roles hard to find. Early Life And Education
Ronald Gabriel Paolillo was born on April 2, 1949, in New Haven, Connecticut, and grew up in nearby Cheshire. His parents, Gabriel and Carmel Paolillo, were of Italian-American descent. His father passed away from lung cancer when Ron was ten years old. As a child, he developed a stutter, and his mother encouraged him to join a local community theater, which helped him gain confidence and find his voice through acting.
After finishing high school, Ron attended the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where he studied drama and appeared in many school plays. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1972. Following that, he attended Fairfield University as a postgraduate student before adopting the stage name “Palillo” for his acting career.
Career
Ron Palillo started his acting journey with a touring Shakespeare company, performing classics such as Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He later joined a repertory company in Miami and earned an off-Broadway role in Hot l Baltimore, staying with the production for over a year. That role opened the door to his television debut in the musical special The Last Sweet Days of Isaac. His big breakthrough came in 1975 when he was cast as Arnold Horshack on the sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter. Horshack’s quirky laugh, often delivered as “Oooh! Oooh!”, made Palillo famous, though the role also led to typecasting that limited future opportunities. After Kotterended in 1979, Palillo appeared in supporting parts on shows like The Love Boat, Alice, Cagney & Lacey, and the soap opera One Life to Live. He also ventured into animation, voicing characters in Laverne & Shirley in the Army, Rubik, the Amazing Cube, and Darkwing Duck, and acted in films such as Skatetown, U.S.A.(1979) and Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives(1986).
In the later years of his career, Palillo returned to the stage in regional theater, performing in productions of Amadeus, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Camelot, and Guys and Dolls. He also directed musicals including A Closer Walk with Patsy Clineand produced his own play, The Lost Boy, about J. M. Barrie, which was staged at several venues. Additionally, he illustrated children’s books like The Red Wings of Christmasand A Gift for the Contessa. In his final phase, he taught acting at the G‑Star School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida, and continued performing in regional theater and voice projects until his death in 2012.
