He played college golf at Randolph‑Macon College in Virginia, serving as the team’s No. 1 player for three years and captain in his senior season. He won six college tournaments and earned a degree in psychology in 1985.
Breed turned his passion into a golf career by working at top clubs. He served as assistant pro at Augusta National (1990–1992) and Deepdale Golf Club (1992–1995), then became head pro at Birchwood Country Club (1996–2001) and Sunningdale Country Club (2001–2012) in New York. His time at Sunningdale helped grow his reputation as an outstanding instructor.
In 2008, Breed began hosting the Golf Channel’s highest-rated instruction show, The Golf Fix, which ran nearly 400 episodes through 2016. He now hosts Course Record with Michael Breedon CBS before PGA Tour coverage, and A New Breed of Golf on Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio. His digital series is also available on YouTube and Facebook Watch. Breed became Chief Digital Instructor for Golf Digest in 2018, creating digital instruction content and leading the “Best Young Teachers” program. Golf Digest ranks him among the Top 50 Instructors in America and the top teacher in New York State. He was also named PGA National Teacher of the Year in 2012.
He has coached more than 30 touring professionals from the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour, Web.com Tour, and other circuits. Notable names include Shaun Micheel, J.J. Henry, and Meghan Francella. Breed has authored instructional books including Picture Perfect Golf Swing (2008) and The 3-Degree Putting Solution (2011), and released the video series Effect to Cause in 2014.
He has earned many awards: Golf Magazine named him a Top 100 Instructor in America (since 2003), and he has won Metropolitan PGA Teacher of the Year twice (2000 and 2009) and Horton Smith Awards multiple times. He has served on the Metropolitan PGA board and represented the PGA of America at National Golf Day since 2012.
Breed lives in Connecticut with his wife and two children, and he supports charities including The First Tee, Folds of Honor, and Wounded Warriors Foundation.
