Michael Boltonwas born as Michael Bolotin in New Haven, Connecticut to George Bolotin, who worked in local politics, and Helen, who stayed home to take care of the house. He has two siblings: a brother named Orrin and a sister named Sandra. By the time he was 7 years old, he could already play the saxophone. He wrote his first songs at age 9. When he turned 14, he started a band called the Nomads. The group did well locally, and at 16 years oldthey were signed to a record deal with Epic Records. With his parents’ permission, he left high school and home at 15. He then spent time traveling across the country along Route 66, doing small jobs, such as babysitting Paula Abdul, to follow his dream of full-time music.

Music Career

Michael Bolton started by singing rock music in the mid‑1970s with a band called Blackjack. After that band ended, he changed his last name to Bolton and began working as a songwriter. One of the songs he co‑wrote, “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” became a hit for singer Laura Branigan in 1983.
In 1987, Bolton released his album The Hunger, which helped him shift to emotional pop ballads. Songs like “That’s What Love Is All About” became hits and made people notice him as a singer. His album Soul Providercame out in 1989 and made him a star. It included his own version of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You,” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and other big hits like “How Can We Be Lovers” and “When I’m Back on My Feet Again.” It earned him his first Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
In 1991, Time, Love & Tendernessbecame his most successful album. It sold over 16 million copies worldwide and featured hits such as “When a Man Loves a Woman” (which went to number one), “Love Is a Wonderful Thing,” and “Time, Love and Tenderness.” This album won another Grammy Award.

He competed as a contestant on Dancing with the Starsin season 11 (2010). He and his partner Chelsie Hightower were the second pair eliminated, on September 28, 2010.
As a producer, Bolton made the documentary American Dream: Detroit, which premiered on May 15, 2018 at the Redford Theatre. It highlights Detroit’s comeback and features interviews with business leaders and musical legends like Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Alice Cooper, Francis Ford Coppola, and others.
There had been rumors he appeared as an extra in the film Dune(1984) as a “spice-eyed” drummer. Bolton has said in interviews that this was not him.
