Michael Boltonwas born Michael Bolotin in New Haven, Connecticut. His dad, George, worked in local Democratic politics, and his mom, Helen, stayed home to raise the children. He has a brother named Orrin and a sister named Sandra. By the time he was seven, he could already play the saxophone, and he started writing songs at nine years old. When he was 14, he formed a band called the Nomads. That group signed a record deal when Bolton was 16. With his parents’ permission, he left high school and home at 15 to travel across the U.S. along Route 66 and focus on music full time. During that time he did a variety of odd jobs, including babysitting for Paula Abdul. Michael Boltonbegan his music journey in the 1970s, first performing hard rock under his birth name Michael Bolotin. He joined the band Blackjack and released rock-style albums before changing his professional name and shifting his style. His breakthrough came in 1987 with the album The Hunger, featuring his soulful cover of "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay." From there, his success grew quickly. In 1989, Soul Providerbrought global fame, with the hit "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," which reached number one on the US charts and earned him a Grammy Award.
Bolton’s next album, Time, Love & Tenderness(1991), sold over 16 million copies worldwide. It featured his Grammy-winning cover of "When a Man Loves a Woman," along with other major hits like "Love Is a Wonderful Thing" and "Missing You Now." Although a lawsuit led to a large settlement over "Love Is a Wonderful Thing," Bolton never stopped performing.
