Max Paciorettywas born on November 20, 1988, in New Canaan, Connecticut, USA. He grew up in a supportive family with his parents and two sisters. As a young boy, Max was full of energy, and his mother introduced him to ice skating to help him stay active. He had a rough start on the ice, during his very first shift in hockey, he received a penalty because he couldn’t skate properly. However, he kept practicing and slowly improved. When he was around 13 years old, he played in the 2002 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team linked to the New York Rangers. He started high school at New Canaan High School, where he led the state in points as a freshman. Later, he transferred to The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut, and played hockey there for two more years. After high school, Max joined the Sioux City Musketeers in the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he had a strong season and was named Rookie of the Year. He then attended the University of Michigan for one year, scoring 38 points in 36 games and earning rookie honors in his college hockey conference.
Max Pacioretty began his NHL journey with the Montreal Canadiens, who drafted him in the first round, 22nd overall, in 2007. He made his NHL debut in 2008, and in his early years he steadily built his skill and confidence on the ice.
From 2011–12 through 2016–17, Max hit his stride with Montreal. In the 2011–12 season, he scored 33 goals and added 32 assists, for a total of 65 pointsin 79 games. He followed that with standout years: 39 goals and 60 points in 2013–14, 37 goals and 67 points in 2014–15, 34 goals and 67 points in 2016–17, and other strong seasons in between. He scored 30 or more goals in five seasons, showing he was one of the team's main goal scorers.
In September 2015, he became the 29th captain of the Montreal Canadiens, and he was the first American and first left wingerto wear the captain’s “C” since Bob Gainey. He also received the Bill Masterton Trophy in 2012, which honors perseverance and dedication after he returned from a serious injury suffered earlier that year.
After completing a 10-season stretchwith Montreal (2008–2018), Max was traded to the Vegas Golden Knightsin 2018. With Vegas, he continued to produce: in 2019–20, he tallied 32 goals and 34 assists (66 points)in 71 games, and in 2020–21, he added 24 goals and 27 assists (51 points)in 48 games.
In the 2022–23 season, he played briefly for the Carolina Hurricanes, appearing in 5 games, and scored 3 goals. The next season, 2023–24, he joined the Washington Capitals, where in 47 gameshe recorded 4 goals and 19 assists (23 points). For the 2024–25 season, Max signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In that season he appeared in 37 games, scoring 5 goals and adding 8 assists, for 13 points.
Over his full NHL career, Max Pacioretty played 939 games, scored 335 goalsand had 346 assists, for a total of 681 pointsacross his time with Montreal, Vegas, Carolina, Washington, and Toronto.
