Biography

Maggie Cassellais an American‑Canadian comedian, actress, writer, and former lawyer who made a big shift from law to making people laugh. She earned a double degree in philosophy and women’s studies and worked as a philosophy teacher before going to law school. For nearly ten years she practiced law in Connecticut and took on cases involving people with AIDS, gay adoption, and marriage equality. During this time she performed stand‑up comedy on the side and discovered that comedy felt more right to her than courtroom work. She soon left law behind and began a full-time comedy career. Cassella created and hosted the Canadian talk show Because I Said So, interviewing celebrities with honest, fearless humor. She also founded the We’re Funny That Way!comedy festival, which highlighted LGBTQ performers. As a producer and writer, she co-created The Vent!in 2009 and continued developing shows through her Toronto-based production company. Cassella has appeared in TV and voice roles, including playing Dr. Mulberry in the 2019 animated Clifford the Big Red Dogremake. She also produced live shows at her venue, The Flying Beaver Pubaret in Toronto, until it closed in 2015 due to a fire. Cassella remains a vibrant presence in comedy, performance, and activism.
