Justin Longhas become a recognizable face thanks to his easygoing style and fun screen presence. He first caught attention in films like Galaxy Quest(1999) and Jeepers Creepers(2001), bringing a mix of humor and charm to each role. Long rose to wider fame through the TV series Ed(2000–2004), where he played the quirky student Warren Cheswick. He later starred in comedies such as Dodgeball(2004), Accepted(2006), and Live Free or Die Hard(2007), and became well-known for voicing Alvin in the Alvin and the Chipmunksmovies. His appeal also came from popular commercials for Apple’s “Get a Mac” ad campaign where he played the laid-back Mac opposite John Hodgman’s PC. Justin Long was born on June 2, 1978, in Fairfield, Connecticut, as the middle child among three brothers. His father, R. James Long, was a philosophy and Latin professor at Fairfield University. His mother, Wendy Lesniak, was a former stage actress. He has Italian/Sicilian and Polish family roots and was raised in a conservative Catholic household.
He attended Fairfield College Preparatory School, a Jesuit high school in Connecticut. After graduation, he went to Vassar College, where he joined the sketch comedy group Laughingstock and appeared in plays such as Butterflies Are Free.
Growing up with a background in academics and performing arts helped him learn both discipline and creativity early on.
Justin Long's acting career began with small TV roles in the late 1990s, but his breakthrough came in 1999 with Galaxy Quest, where he played the young space crew member Brandon. He then appeared in films such as Jeepers Creepers(2001), DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story(2004), Accepted(2006), Idiocracy, Waiting..., and The Break-Up.
From 2000 to 2004, Justin starred on the NBC TV series Ed, playing the social misfit Warren Cheswick, which won him wider attention. He made a mark in commercials too, most notably in Apple’s famous "Get a Mac" campaign, where he played the laid back Mac opposite John Hodgman’s PC.
In 2007, he co-starred with Bruce Willis in Live Free or Die Hard, playing a white hat hacker in the action hit. That same year, he joined the cast of The Sasquatch Gang.
In later years, he appeared in He's Just Not That into You(2009), After.Life(2009), Going the Distance(2010), and voiced characters in animation like Alpha and Omegaand MegaMind.
Justin expanded his work into more independent and genre films such as Comet(2014), which he also produced, Tusk(2014), and The Lookalike(2014). He later voiced roles in Netflix’s F Is for Family, started the podcast Life Is Short with Justin Longin 2019, and played James Comey in a dramatic reading of the Mueller Report in 2019.
In 2024, he moved into writing and directing by contributing a segment to the horror anthology V/H/S/Beyond, released on Shudder in October.
