John Edward “Bags” Bagley was born on April 23, 1960, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He attended Warren Harding High School in Bridgeport, where he emerged as a standout guard in Connecticut school basketball.
During his time at Harding, he earned All‑State honors in the Class L division, helping his team compete at the state level by the late 1970s. His strong performance in high school set the stage for his move to Boston College, where he played in the Big East Conference and became one of the top guards in college basketball.
College Career
John Bagleyplayed three seasons for Boston Collegefrom 1979 to 1982. He averaged 17.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per gamewhile shooting nearly 49.6% from the fieldover his college career.As a freshman (1979–80), he led BC in scoring with 11.8 points per game, earned a spot on the Big East All-Freshman Team, and played 29 games.In his sophomore year (1980–81), Bagley averaged 20.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per gamein about 32.2 minutes per game. He was named Big East Player of the Year, led Boston College to the Big East regular-season title, and helped the team reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
During his junior season (1981–82), he improved to 21.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, shooting over 50%from the field. He led BC to the Elite Eightin the NCAA Tournament and became the first Eagles player to earn two consecutive All-Big East First Teamnods.
Over 91 college games, Bagley was a two-time First-Team All-Big Eastand received Honorable Mention All-Americanhonors. He also played for the U.S. team in the 1981 World University Games, leading the squad in scoring with 14.8 points per game.
Bagley left Boston College after his junior year and entered the 1982 NBA Draftas the first Eagles player ever to win Big East Player of the Year.
Professional Career
John Bagley was selected 12th overall in the 1982 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He signed a three-year deal with Cleveland and played five full seasons with them (1982–1987), becoming a steady starting point guard.His best year came in 1985–86, when he averaged 11.7 points, 9.4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game, also hitting his career-high free throw and three-point percentages (.791 FT% and .243 3P%).
In 1987, the Cavaliers traded him to the New Jersey Nets in a multi-player deal. With the Nets, he played all 82 games in one season—the only time he ever did—averaging a career-high 12.0 points per game, which led the team. In 1989, Bagley joined the Boston Celtics, where he played until 1992. He missed the entire 1990–91 season due to a knee injury and surgery. When he returned, he started 59 games in 1992, filling in for injured guards and helping the team in the playoffs.
His final NBA season began in 1993, when he signed with the Atlanta Hawks for 1993–94. After that, he retired, wrapping up an 11-year NBA career.
In total, Bagley appeared in 665 regular-season games, averaging 8.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game, with a field goal percentage of 43.7% and a free throw percentage of 77.9%.He remains a Cavaliers franchise leader in playoff assists and career steals, ranking among the top five in franchise history for both categories.
