Early Life

James David Van Der Beek was born on March 8, 1977 in Cheshire, Connecticut, the oldest of three children of Melinda, a former dancer and gymnastics teacher, and James William Van Der Beek, a cell phone company executive and former minor league baseball pitcher. He started acting at age 13 after a football injury gave him a concussion and kept him off the field. During recovery he played Danny Zuko in his school production of Grease, sparking his interest in theatre.
Those next three years, he performed in local theatre. At 16 he and his mother traveled to New York City to find an agent. About a year later, he was cast in the off‑Broadway play Finding the Sunat age 16 and later appeared in Shenandoahat 17 while still in high school.
He earned an academic scholarship to Drew University, where he began studying English with a minor in sociology. That was cut short when he won the lead role in Dawson's Creek, and he left college to pursue acting full time.

Career

James Van Der Beek began acting professionally in 1993 with an off Broadway debut at age 16 in the play Finding the Sunby Edward Albee. His first screen role came in 1996 with a small part in I Love You, I Love You Not.
His big break arrived in 1998, when he won the lead role of Dawson Leery in Dawson’s Creek. The show aired for six seasons on The WB and turned him into a teen icon. During his time on the series, he also starred in popular movies like Varsity Blues(1999), Texas Rangers(2001), and The Rules of Attraction(2002).
After Dawson’s Creekended in 2003, his career slowed in terms of leading roles, but he kept working. He took parts in off Broadway plays, appeared in films like Formosa Betrayed(2009)—winning a Best Actor award at the San Diego Film Festival—and acted in TV shows such as Ugly Betty, How I Met Your Mother, and One Tree Hill.
From 2012 to 2013, he played a funny version of himself in the sitcom Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, earning praise for his comic timing. He then starred as FBI Agent Elijah Mundo on CSI: Cyber(2015–2016), voiced Boris in Disney Junior’s Vampirina, and appeared in the FX drama Pose(2018).
Van Der Beek also branched into writing and producing. He co created and starred in the Viceland series What Would Diplo Do?(2017), which critics received well.
In recent years, he continued acting in guest roles, voice work, and stage projects, demonstrating a wide range from drama to comedy, and earning respect for both his acting and behind the scenes creativity.
