Biography
Horace Brownwas born in Hartford, Connecticut, and raised by his father, who was a Baptist minister. He grew up singing in church and also learned to play instruments like trombone and saxophone in his high school marching band.
He originally wanted to be a professional basketball player, but a knee injury ended that dream and shifted his focus to music. His big break came in 1991 when DeVante Swing of Jodeci heard one of his demo recordings and helped him get work doing background vocals and writing songs for other R&B artists.
In 1994, he signed with Uptown Records and released his debut single, “Taste Your Love.” The song stirred controversy and was even banned in parts of the American South, but it still reached number 38 on Billboard’s R&B chart. A second single was planned, but his Uptown album was never released.
When label president Andre Harrell moved to Motown Records, he signed Horace Brown to Motown as well. In 1996, Brown released his first official album, titled Horace Brown. It featured singles like “One for the Money” and “Things We Do for Love,” and included collaborations with artists like Faith Evans, Puff Daddy, and Jay-Z. The album reached number 145 on the Billboard 200 and number 18 on the R&B Albums chart.
He continued to work in music after releasing that album, collaborating with other artists like Mr. Cheeks, Royal Flush, Lisha, and PrinZe Gabriel. In the early 2000s, he released independent singles like “Shake It Up” and “This Is the One” featuring Styles P. He has also toured widely, including international shows with Keith Sweat, and appeared on the reality TV program Come Back Kingsalongside other R&B artists. Horace Brown remains active in music, writing and performing with a focus on soulful vocals and R&B style well into the 2010s.
