While growing up in Bridgeport, he and family members such as his cousins and brother would drive around the city playing pick‑up games at local parks, competing fiercely even over simple stakes like soda drinks. He attended Notre Dame High School in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he starred as a guard in basketball. He earned first-team All‑State honors during his high school career and was well-known around the state for his skill and discipline on the court.
After high school, Oleynick enrolled at Seattle University and played for the Redhawks from 1972 to 1975. He earned first-team All‑WCAC honors twice and second-team in his freshman year, while being named WCAC Player of the Year in 1974. He also became a scoring star, averaging about 22.6 points per game during his college career—one of the best in program history.
During the summer of 1974, he represented the United States on the national team at the FIBA World Championship and helped the team win a bronze medal. His strong play in college led to being picked in the first round, 12th overall, by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1975 NBA Draft.
