Early Life And Education

Ernest Borgnine was born Ermes Effron Borgnino on January 24, 1917, in Hamden, Connecticut. He was the son of Italian immigrants who briefly separated when he was two, leading him to live with his mother in Italy for about four and a half years before returning to Connecticut in 1923. The family then changed their last name from Borgnino to Borgnine, and settled in New Haven where he later graduated from James Hillhouse High School.
As a child, Borgnine was active in sports, especially boxing, but he did not show interest in acting. After high school, in 1935, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served nearly ten years, including during World War II, and left the service as a gunner’s mate first class in 1945.
Once the war ended, Borgnine returned home unsure of his next step. His mother encouraged him to try acting. With help from the G.I. Bill, he studied acting for six months at the Randall School of Dramatic Art in Hartford, Connecticut. After that, in 1946 he joined the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia, where he worked behind the scenes and learned many different roles before making his Broadway debut in 1949.

Acting Career

Ernest Borgnine’s film career began in 1951 with a small role in The Whistle at Eaton Falls. His big breakthrough came in 1953 when he played Sergeant "Fatso" Judson in From Here to Eternity, a film that won Best Picture at the Oscars and showed his talent as a strong character actor.
In 1955, he surprised people by taking on the lead role in Marty, playing a kind butcher named Marty Piletti. His performance earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor and several other major awards, making him a star. After that, he appeared in many films throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including Johnny Guitar, Vera Cruz, Bad Day at Black Rock, The Vikings, The Dirty Dozen, The Wild Bunch, and The Poseidon Adventure.
From 1962 to 1966, Borgnine played Lieutenant Commander Quinton McHale in the popular TV sitcom McHale’s Navy. He starred in 138 episodes over four seasons and earned an Emmy nomination for his performance.
In the 1980s, he returned to TV in a strong role as Dominic Santini in the action series Airwolf(1984–1986) alongside Jan-Michael Vincent. He also voiced Mermaid Man on SpongeBob SquarePantsfrom 1999 until his death in 2012, and voiced Carface in All Dogs Go to Heaven 2.
Later in life, Borgnine earned another Emmy nomination for a guest role on the final season of ERin 2009 at the age of 92. His career spanned more than 60 years, with over 200 roles in films and television, earning him fame and respect across the entertainment world.
