Ellen Muth was born on March 6, 1981, in Milford, Connecticut. She is the daughter of Eric and Rachel Muth. From an early age, she showed a strong interest in the arts, especially acting. Ellen studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York City, which helped her grow as a performer. She also attended the Skip Barber Racing School, showing her interest in activities beyond acting. She is a member of both Mensa and Intertel, which are organizations for people with high IQs.
Career
Ellen Muth began acting in 1995, with her first movie role in Dolores Claiborne, earning her a Best Supporting Actress award at the Tokyo International Film Festival. She gained wider attention in 1999 for her role in The Young Girl and the Monsoon, winning the American Film Institute’s Best Actress Award.
Her most well-known role came in the Showtime series Dead Like Me(2003–2004), where she played Georgia "George" Lass, a young woman who becomes a grim reaper and narrates her own story. Ellen starred in 29 episodes over two seasons. Her performance earned nominations for both a Saturn Award and a Satellite Award in the Best Actress category. A follow-up made-for-DVD film, Dead Like Me: Life After Death, was released in 2009 with her returning to the role.
Beyond Dead Like Me, Ellen appeared in many TV roles and films. She was in Law & Orderand Law & Order: SVU, and starred in TV films like The Truth About Janeand Two Against Time(2002). Later she appeared in small films and projects, including Jack 'n' Jilland the short Tofu the Vegan Zombie.
In 2013, Ellen guest-starred in two episodes of Hannibal, reprising a version of her Dead Like Mecharacter—Georgia—but renamed Georgia Madchen with a different storyline.
After that, her acting work slowed significantly. Her most recent credit was the horror film Mark of the Beastaround 2012. By the early 2020s, she had stepped back from acting and focused on running a coffee business, a cat-breeding venture, and attending fan events from time to time.
