Biography
Clare Beamsis an American author known for her fiction writing, especially her unique mix of the historical, the strange, and the emotional. She was born around 1981 or 1982 and grew up in Connecticut. From a young age, she was drawn to books and storytelling. After finishing high school, she went on to study writing more deeply. In 2006, she earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia Universityin New York City.
After completing her studies, Clare Beams spent several years working as a high school English teacher in Massachusetts, where she taught literature and writing to teenagers. This time in the classroom helped shape her love for language and story and gave her insight into how people learn and respond to creative expression.
In 2016, Clare published her first book titled "We Show What We Have Learned", a collection of short stories. The book was praised by critics and won the Bard Fiction Prize. It was also named a finalist for several national literary awards, including the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, the New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award, and the Shirley Jackson Award. These honors marked her as a new and powerful voice in American fiction.
In 2020, she released her first novel, "The Illness Lesson", which also received wide recognition. The novel was named a New York Times Editors’ Choiceand was longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. Her ability to blend historical settings with emotional and psychological depth gained strong praise from readers and reviewers alike.
In 2024, Clare Beams published her second novel titled "The Garden", which was met with more praise. The story explores deep and sometimes unsettling ideas about motherhood, the human body, and medical ethics, while still being grounded in character and atmosphere. The book was noted for its vivid storytelling and emotional impact.
Clare's short fictionhas appeared in several respected literary magazines such as One Story, n+1, Ecotone, Conjunctions, The Common, Kenyon Review, Hayden’s Ferry Review, and Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading. Some of her stories were also selected for The Best American Nonrequired Reading, and others were honored in The Best American Short Storiesand Pushcart Prizecollections.
She has received fellowships and supportfrom major creative institutions, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, Sewanee Writers’ Conference, MacDowell, and the Sustainable Arts Foundation. In 2023, she was a finalist for the Joyce Carol Oates/New Literary Project Prize, a major national award that supports new voices in fiction.
Today, Clare Beams lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvaniawith her husband and two daughters. Along with writing, she teaches fiction in the MFA program at Randolph College, helping new writers develop their craft. Through her stories and her teaching, she continues to shape the world of modern fiction with her thoughtful and haunting work.
