Biography
Claire Naderwas born on July 18, 1928, in Connecticut. She earned her college degree from Smith College and later completed a Ph.D. in Public Law and Government at Columbia University, where her dissertation examined how natural scientists influenced government decisions in atomic energy policy.
In the 1960s, Claire became the first social scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where she led research on the societal effects of nuclear weapons. She served as director of Science in Society Studies from 1963 to 1966 and organized a major global conference on science and technology in developing countries in 1967, for which she co-edited the proceedings.
Throughout her career, she focused on how science, technology, and public policy interact. She chaired the Council for Responsible Genetics from 1994 to 1996, led community-driven health care efforts by founding the Winsted Health Center Foundation, and for over thirty years managed the Joe A. Callaway Award for Civic Courage in Washington, D.C.
Claire is also an author. Her most recent book, You Are Your Own Best Teacher!, encourages young readers to ask questions, think critically, and engage with the wider world.
Her life’s work shows a deep commitment to helping people understand scientific ideas in society and to empowering citizens to take part in public life thoughtfully and ethically.
