Born Christian Talcott Webster in Norwalk on October 13, 1988, he began writing rap lyrics by age eleven after being inspired by icons like Eminem and Dr. Dre. His early mixtapes earned him a devoted following called “The Ninjas,” and led to collaborations with high profile artists such as Mac Miller and Method Man. In 2013, Webby launched his own label, Homegrown Music, and signed a deal with eOne Music. He rapped under the name Vindictive and became well known as a freestyler in college parties. In March 2009, after a robbery incident and being removed from school, he decided to focus fully on music. Shortly after, in April 2009, he released his first mixtape called The White Noise LP, which included the song “La La La,” his first popular track released on YouTube.
In the next eighteen months, he released a total of six mixtapes, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Rapper, Optimus Rhyme, The Underclassmen, Best in the Burbs, and Webster’s Laboratory, all available for free on DatPiff. His music grew fast in popularity. In December 2011, he launched his first official EP There Goes the Neighborhoodon his own label Homegrown Music. The EP went to number one on the iTunes hip-hop chart and reached No. 101 on the Billboard 200, bringing him wider attention.
On September 30, 2012, he dropped the mixtape Bars On Me, hosted by DJ Drama. It featured guest artists like Method Man, Kid Ink, Bun B and production by big names such as Cardo and Ski Beatz. This mixtape got more than 100,000 downloads in less than a week.
In mid-2013, after staying independent for much of his career, Webby signed a deal with E1 Music while running his own label Homegrown Music. On November 12, 2013, he released the EP Homegrown, which he described as showing his growth from a rapper into a full artist. In 2014, Chris released his first studio album, Chemically Imbalanced, featuring artists like Tech N9ne, Dizzy Wright and Jarren Benton. The album came out on October 27, 2014.
