Cathleen Falsani was born on September 25, 1970, in Connecticut. Her family came from Irish and Italian roots and she was raised in a Roman Catholic tradition. When she was around ten years old, her parents left the Catholic Church and joined a Southern Baptist congregation. From that point on, she was brought up as an evangelical Protestant, attending Sunday services and activities in that church community.
She went to Christian Heritage School, a private evangelical prep school in Trumbull, Connecticut, and finished there in 1988. After graduation, she studied at Wheaton College in Illinois, where she earned her undergraduate degree. Following Wheaton, she earned a master’s degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, and another master’s degree in theological studies from Garrett–Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.
Cathleen Falsani began her journalism work as a religion beat reporter for the Daily Southtownin Chicago. In September 2000, she joined the Chicago Sun‑Timesas a staff religion writer and later became its religion columnist, a role she held until January 2010. During her tenure at the Sun‑Times (2000–2010), she wrote a weekly column about faith, culture, music, movies, politics, and everyday life, gaining praise as “one of Chicago’s most compelling columnists.”
She also worked as a columnist and correspondent for Religion News Service, providing faith-focused stories to a wide audience, and continued in that role for many years. From August 2011 to December 2012, she served as web editor and director of new mediaat Sojournersmagazine, where she managed and wrote for its popular blog called God’s Politics.
