Because of his vast talent and deep presence, Brian Dennehybecame one of America’s most memorable actors. He appeared in over 180 films, TV shows, and stage productions, earning a Golden Globe, two Tony Awards, and nominations for six Emmys during a career spanning more than five decades. His breakout film role came in First Blood(1982), where he played the small town sheriff who faces off against Rambo, followed by notable turns in Cocoon, Tommy Boy, and Presumed Innocent. Dennehy was also celebrated for his stage work, especially in Death of a Salesmanand Long Day’s Journey into Night, winning Tonys in 1999 and 2003, and later an Olivier Award in London. He was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2010, cementing his legacy as a towering figure in modern acting.

Early Life

Brian Manion Dennehy was born on July 9, 1938, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Hannah, who was a nurse, and Edward Dennehy, who worked as an editor for the Associated Press. He had two brothers, Michael and Edward, and the family was Irish American and Catholic. When he was young, they moved to Long Island, New York, and he went to Chaminade High School in Mineola.
In 1956 he started at Columbia University on a football scholarship. He paused college to join the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for five years in the U.S., Japan, and Korea. He returned to Columbia and earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1965. To support himself while he took part in regional theater, he worked in many different jobs: driving a taxi, bartending, working as a truck driver, and briefly as a stockbroker.

Career

Brian Dennehy began acting in the mid 1970s after many years in community theater on Long Island and New York. He got his first small movie role in Semi Tough(1977), playing a football type. After that, he appeared in TV shows like Kojak, MASH*, Lou Grant, Dallas, and Dynasty.
His big film breakthrough came with First Blood(1982) as Sheriff Will Teasle opposite Sylvester Stallone. After that, he appeared in major films like Gorky Park, Cocoon, Silverado, F/X, and Presumed Innocent. In the late 1980s and 1990s, he became known for roles in Best Seller, Tommy Boy, and Romeo + Juliet.
On television, Dennehy earned six Emmy nominations. His first came for the TV movie A Killing in a Small Town(1990). He played serial killer John Wayne Gacy in To Catch a Killer(1992), and starred in six "Jack Reed" TV movies from 1992 to 1996, even directing or writing some of them. He also had recurring roles in later TV series including Public Morals, Hap and Leonard, and The Blacklist.
Although he appeared in nearly two hundred screen roles, his greatest passion remained the stage. He made his Broadway debut with Translationsin 1995. In 1999, he won his first Tony Award for his role as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, and in 2003 he won a second Tony for Long Day’s Journey Into Night. He also won an Olivier Award in London for Death of a Salesman, and was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2010.
Dennehy showed impressive range throughout his career. He voiced the rat Django in Ratatouille(2007), appeared in Righteous Kill(2008), and played important roles in The Next Three Daysand other later films. He stayed active in theater, television, and film well into his seventies.

Death

Brian Dennehy died on April 15, 2020, of cardiac arrest due to sepsis in New Haven, Connecticut. He was 81 years old at the time of his death.
