Akua Naru, whose real name is LaTanya Olatunji, was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in the late 1970s, and grew up in a family where gospel music and strong Black women played a big role in her early life. At age nine, her uncle shared hip-hop records with her, sparking her love for rap, while her grandmother took her to church, where she learned about confident leadership and community strength.
She wrote poetry and started performing as a young MC at neighborhood gatherings, and later joined a repertory theater group during her school years. There, she learned to use recording tools and perform on stage, while studying figures like Malcolm X, Angela Davis, and Toni Morrison, who shaped her poetic voice. Akua lived in places like Philadelphia, New York, Asia, and West Africa before finally moving to Cologne, Germany in 2011, where she recorded her first album The Journey Aflame.
