Jul 25, 20257.2K Shares314K Views Tyson Aaron Wheeler was born on October 8, 1975, in New Britain, Connecticut. He grew up in New London, Connecticut, and played high school basketball at New London High School, where he earned all‑state honors as a senior.
Wheeler attended the University of Rhode Island from 1994 to 1998. As a point guard, he became one of the best players in school history. He earned all-conference recognition four straight years—starting with A‑10 All‑Rookie honors as a freshman, then Atlantic 10 All‑Second Team as a sophomore, and first-team honors as a junior and senior. He helped lead Rhode Island to the Elite Eight in the 1998 NCAA Tournament.
He graduated as URI’s second-leading scorer with 1,918 career points, and holds program records for career assists (712)and career steals (205). Wheeler was inducted into the University of Rhode Island’s All‑Century Team in 2006 and into its Hall of Fame in 2011.
