Biography
Sylvester “Sly” Williams was born on January 26, 1958, in New Haven, Connecticut, one of a dozen children growing up without a father. He attended Lee High School in New Haven, where he stood out as a top player, averaging 31 points and 22 rebounds per game and leading his team to its first state and district titles in 1976.
He went on to play college basketball at the University of Rhode Island from 1976 to 1979. During his three seasons there, he led his team in scoring and rebounding each year and was named a consensus second team All American in 1979.
While in college, Williams became well known in New England and helped establish Rhode Island’s strong rivalry with Providence College. He was a key figure as Rhode Island built a program around his skills on the court.
Outside of basketball, his life included many personal struggles. He faced pressure from his upbringing and later reflected that he thrived on big games and attention, even amid difficulty in his personal life.
