Ray Mancini was born Raymond Michael Mancino on March 4, 1961, in Youngstown, Ohio. Boxing ran in his family, his father, Lenny “Boom Boom” Mancini, was a top lightweight boxer in the 1940s but never got his chance at a world title due to injuries from World War II.
From when he was very young, Ray’s father encouraged him to train in boxing. Lenny’s teachings and his own passion for the sport shaped Ray’s early years. Ray grew up wanting to do what his father could not, win the world title. That goal stayed with him through his childhood.

Amateur Career

When Ray Mancini was growing up, he won 43 of his 50 amateur fights, earning a strong 43–7 record. He earned local Golden Gloves titles in Youngstown and the Northeastern Ohio area in 1977, 1978, and 1979. In 1978, he made it to the national Golden Gloves semi-finals, and the following year, 1979, he reached the quarter-finals. He also won the Northeast Ohio AAU Championship in 1978, and made it to the quarter-finals in the National AAU Tournament. In an interview, Ray remembered his first amateur fight clearly. It was in Cleveland’s Navy Park Gym, in April. He was very nervous at first, but when the bell rang, he ran at his opponent with body shots and headshots. He dropped his opponent in the first round, and the referee stopped the fight after about thirty seconds. The crowd cheered, and Ray felt he was on his way to making his dream come true.
