He’s become the face of modern cycling dominance. Jonas Vingegaard, a Danish road racer for Team Jumbo–Visma, rose to global fame by winning the Tour de France in both 2022 and 2023. Known for his powerful climbing and steady pace, he beat top rivals like Tadej Pogačar by wide margins. His dramatic wins in the Alps helped him claim the yellow jersey and make Denmark proud on the world’s biggest cycling stage. Journalists now rank him among the top climbers of his generation.

Early Life

Jonas Vingegaard was born on December 10, 1996, in Hillerslev, a small fishing village in northern Denmark with just a few hundred people. He took part in youth sports like football and handball before discovering cycling when he watched a local stage of the Tour of Denmark along with his father. At around age 10 or 11, he joined the local cycling club, Thy Cykle Ring, and later rode for Aalborg Cykle Ring and Odder Cykel Klub as he grew older.
During his teenage years, Jonas worked mornings at a cold fish factory in Hanstholm, handling fish from early dawn until noon, and then trained by bike in the afternoons. School for him included attending Hillerslev primary school through 7th grade, then moving on to Tingstrup School for 8th and 9th grades, and later a one-year sports-focused boarding school at ISI Idrætsefterskole in Ikast before doing higher commercial studies at Thisted Handelsgymnasium.

Career

Jonas Vingegaard turned professional in 2016 with the Danish ColoQuick‑Cult team. In his early pro years, he also worked morning shifts at a fish factory in Hanstholm, then trained by bike in the afternoon. This tough daily routine helped build his discipline and strength.
In 2019, he joined top-tier Team Jumbo–Visma (now Visma–Lease a Bike). He marked his first WorldTour victory with a stage win at Tour de Pologne. That same year, he made his Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta a España, helping teammate Primož Roglič to overall victory.
His breakthrough came in 2021. He won a stage at the UAE Tour and the overall Settimana Coppi e Bartali. He also finished second overall at Itzulia Basque Country. When Roglič crashed in the Tour de France, Vingegaard stepped up and rode impressively to finish second overall.
In 2022, he won his first Tour de France, claiming two stages and the polka dot jersey for best climber, becoming only the second Dane ever to win the race. He defended the title in 2023 with a commanding performance: a huge margin of victory, key stage successes, triumphs in Itzulia Basque Country and Critérium du Dauphiné, and a silver medal at the Vuelta a España with two stage wins.
In 2024, despite suffering a serious crash in the Itzulia Basque Country resulting in fractures and a punctured lung, he recovered to win a stage and finish second in the Tour de France. He later won the Tour de Pologne before ending his season early due to fatigue.
In early 2025, Vingegaard started strong by winning the Volta ao Algarve overall, including a time‑trial stage victory. He went on to finish second again in the 2025 Tour de France.
Throughout his rise, Vingegaard has been praised for his climbing talent, time trial ability, and his ongoing rivalry with Tadej Pogačar. He earned the prestigious 2023 Vélo d’Or award, given to the world’s best cyclist.
