Few players have dominated the poker world like Johnny Chan. He became a legend by winning the World Series of Poker Main Event in back-to-back years, 1987 and 1988. That rare feat, coupled with a total of ten WSOP bracelets, made him a household name in the poker community. He’s also known for his cool play style, reading opponents with ease, and even bringing an orange to the table—first as a fresh scent to mask smoke, and later as a quirky charm. Beyond the game, he has written poker books, appeared in the movie Rounders, and owns restaurants in Las Vegas.

Early Life

Johnny Chan was born in 1957 in Guangzhou (Canton), China. When he was six, his family moved to Hong Kong, and then in 1968 they settled in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1973, the family moved again to Houston, Texas, where they ran restaurants. Chan began playing cards with the restaurant staff, and that’s how he first got into poker.
At age 16, he visited Las Vegas and, even though he wasn’t old enough to gamble legally, he sat in a cash game. He reportedly turned $500 into $20,000 in one night but lost it all the next day.
After high school, Chan began studying hotel and restaurant management at the University of Houston, planning to work in the family business. At age 21, he left college and moved to Las Vegas to pursue poker full-time.

Over the years, Chan won a total of 10 WSOP bracelets across different poker formats, such as Limit Hold’em, Seven Card Stud, Deuce-to-Seven Draw, Pot-Limit Omaha, Heads-Up, and Pot-Limit Hold’em.
He also earned over $8.7 million in live tournament winnings. In 2004, he won the televised Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament, and he had another strong showing in 2005.
