At the age of eight, his mother sent him to a school near Guanajuato, where he studied for about three years before returning to his hometown. When he was fourteen, his father sent him to a monastery in Morelos, where he lived under the care of Father David Salgado. During this time, he considered becoming a priest and even joined a seminary in Cuernavaca. However, after some time, he realized that his true passion was music, and he decided to leave the seminary to follow that path. These early experiences, both in rural life and in religious study, played a significant role in shaping his personality and future artistic style.

Joan Sebastian, who chose that name in 1977, first released an album called "Pedro Parrandas"in 1972 under his birth name, José Manuel Figueroa. Over time, his music gained popularity, and he became widely known during the 1980s for his heartfelt songs and his unique live shows, where he often performed on horseback, earning him the nickname “El Rey del Jaripeo”(the King of Mexican rodeo).
He built a strong fan base with his emotional lyrics that spoke of love and loss, and he achieved significant success on music charts. He had 22 songs placed on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, with several top hits on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart, like the beloved “Secreto de Amor”from 2000.
