Hunter S. Thompson was born on July 18, 1937, in Louisville, Kentucky. His father, Jack Thompson, worked as an insurance agent, and his mother, Virginia Davidson Thompson, was a librarian. When Hunter was 14, his father died, and his mother took a job at a local library to support the family. Thompson had a rebellious nature from a young age and often got into trouble. He developed a strong interest in reading, especially in the works of authors like Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. During high school, he joined the Athenaeum Literary Association, a respected writing club. However, in 1955, shortly before graduation, he was jailed for helping a friend rob a man, which led to his expulsion from school. Afterward, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956.

Education

Hunter S. Thompson attended several schools in his early years in Louisville, Kentucky. He studied at the private Highland Middle School and later went to Louisville Male High School. While in high school, Thompson showed talent in writing and joined the Athenaeum Literary Association, a respected club for young writers. However, in 1955, just weeks before graduation, he was arrested for robbery and spent 30 days in jail. Because of this, he was not allowed to graduate with his class.

After his time in jail, Thompson did not return to high school. In 1956, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was later stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Early Journalism Career

Hunter S. Thompson began his journalism career in the late 1950s after leaving the U.S. Air Force. While stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, he worked as a sports editor for the base newspaper, The Command Courier. His style was bold and often got him in trouble with his supervisors, but it showed his strong voice early on. After leaving the Air Force in 1958, Thompson took several short-term jobs with newspapers across the country.

He worked briefly for the Beaumont Enterprisein Texas, covering local news. In 1959, he moved to New York City and worked as a copyboy for Timemagazine.
