Donnie Iris, born Dominic Ierace on February 28, 1943, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, grew up in Ellwood City, where his passion for music began at an early age. His mother taught him to sing, and by the age of five, he was performing at weddings. At just eight years old, he was already appearing on local television programs. As he got older, Iris taught himself to play the guitar and later learned the drums when his voice was changing during adolescence. While studying at Slippery Rock State College, he formed his first band, Donnie and the Donnells, with other students. The group performed pop and rhythm-and-blues songs at local parties and events, giving Iris his first real taste of performing for live audiences.
In 1964, Iris co-founded the Jaggerz, a band that gained national attention in 1970 when he wrote their hit single “The Rapper.” The song climbed to number two on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the biggest hits of that year. After his time with the Jaggerz, Iris joined the funk-rock group Wild Cherry as a guitarist and background vocalist. In 1979, he contributed to their album Only the Wild Survive. The following year, Iris and former Wild Cherry keyboardist Mark Avsec formed Donnie Iris and the Cruisers. Their debut album Back on the Streetsfeatured the hit single “Ah! Leah!”, which reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of Iris’s signature songs. The band followed this success with their second album, King Cool, in 1981, which included the rock hit “Love Is Like a Rock,” peaking at number 37 on the Hot 100 and number 9 on the Mainstream Rock chart.
Throughout the 1980s, Donnie Iris and the Cruisers continued to release music and tour. In 1985, they released No Muss...No Fuss, which featured the single “Injured in the Game of Love.” The song reached number 91 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album peaked at number 115 on the Billboard 200. Despite not matching the national chart success of his earlier work, Iris maintained a strong and loyal fan base, particularly in the Pittsburgh area, where he earned the nickname “King Cool of Rock and Roll.” His music continued to receive airplay on local radio stations, keeping his songs alive for new generations of listeners. In recognition of his impact on the regional music scene, Donnie Iris was honored with a Pittsburgh Rock ’N’ Roll Legends Award, solidifying his legacy as one of the area’s most beloved rock performers.
As of 2025, Donnie Iris’s estimated net worth is around $6 million, earned through his decades-long career in rock music, his work as a businessman running Don Iris Inc., and his activity as a YouTube content creator.
