Biography

Christopher “Chris” Gerard Smith was born on May 17, 1970, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He played college basketball at the University of Connecticut (UConn), scoring 2,145 points over four years and setting the Big East record with 1,140 points. Smith also made 242 career three point field goals and was one of only two UConn players to score over 500 points in three seasons.
During college, he earned honors as a McDonald’s All American and was selected to the All Big East first team. He also made the UConn Basketball All Century Team and was nominated for the prestigious John Wooden Award. Internationally, Smith represented the USA at the 1990 FIBA World Championship, helping the team win a bronze medal, and also competed in the Goodwill Games, earning silver.
Smith was picked by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the 1992 NBA Draft (34th overall). He played three seasons in the NBA, appearing in 224 games and averaging 5.1 points, 2.8 assists, 1.3 rebounds, and 0.5 steals per game.
After leaving the NBA, he continued playing professionally in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and in European leagues until about 2000. Following his basketball career, Smith moved into business, earning a B.A. in business administration and working in sales and finance. He served as a business development officer at People’s Bank and later at its insurance subsidiary Beardsley, Brown & Bassett.
